Racial Reconciliation

Racism isn’t a binary black-white issue, because it affects Asians, Latinos, Native Americans and others. As a church made up of diverse languages and cultures, Episcopalians know we have much work to do.

At our 2018 General Convention, The Episcopal Church’s national meeting, we backed up our words about racial reconciliation with money and energy. First, we committed ourselves to “Becoming Beloved Community,” a long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation and justice. It represents a series of interrelated commitments around which Episcopalians can organize efforts to respond to racial injustice and build a community of people working for reconciliation and healing:

Telling the truth about the church and race

Proclaiming the dream of beloved community

Practicing the way of love

Repairing the breach in society and institutions

We also committed $5 million to help local Episcopal churches respond to racial injustice. Most of the money will go to grants to help this work in communities – dioceses, congregations and regions – where they can best respond to their local context. We know that we have a lot of work to do to rectify centuries of racial injustice within our system. We are committed to that work because we are committed to our vow to “respect the dignity of every human being.”

Digging Deeper

Creation Care & Episcopal Climate News

Larger and more frequent hurricanes, devastating churches and everything else in their path. Intense inland droughts and wildfires. Wildlife with no place to go, bringing about the planet’s sixth mass extinction. Disappearing Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. As Icelandic glaciers melt and uncover ancient volcanoes that burst forth molten rocks, Luke 19:40 comes to life and the stones literally cry out.

Human-made (or anthropogenic) climate change is not just an environmental issue, it is an everything issue, threatening everything we care about as Christians fulfilling our Baptismal vows to love our neighbors as ourselves and to strive for justice and peace: Poverty and racism. War and peace. Jobs. Public health. Food prices.

The church is partly to blame for this scientific and humanitarian catastrophe. Theologies of the past encouraged humans to see ourselves as the planet’s masters, lording over the earth as a “dominion” to be exploited. We were told that the planet had no value other than its ability to give us “natural resources,” resources created just for us. This led to greed, excessive consumption, and the rampant destruction of sacred places at the wicked hands of fossil fuels.

The church had a hand in creating climate change, and now we can have a hand in solving it. We can take stock of our church resources, we can consume less, we can celebrate God through the lens of nature, we can advocate for systemic social change, and we can teach a new story and a new theology: God did not create human beings to be separate from or above nature–God created us as part of nature. We may be the smartest and most sentient species in the earth community, but that does not remove us from that community. Instead, it gives us a special responsibility to care for our fellow members of nature, and to live in right relationship with the rest of creation.

We remember that when Jesus wanted to pray, He did not go to the temple. He went to the wilderness, or to the garden. We can likewise find God in our gardens, our city and national parks, and our seashores and hiking trails. It is time to protect these places and the spirituality they inspire, and stand up to climate change.

Episcopal Climate News was started and is currently edited by the Rev. Nathan Empsall, a transitional deacon, environmental-studies graduate student at Yale, and former Sierra Club employee. The team has grown to include Perry Hodgkins Jones, a self-described “happy member of the Episcopal laity” who works for an environmental education non-profit in western North Carolina and holds a Masters in Theology and the Environment from Sewanee’s School of Theology. Both Nathan and Perry serve on the Episcopal Church’s official Task Force on Care of Creation and Environmental Racism, and were members of the presiding bishop’s delegation to COP23, the United Nations’ 2017 climate-change conference.

TRADITION AND REVELATION, HAND IN HAND

All our lovely ancient tradition is integral to who we are and what we believe, and, equally important, to how we live in our contemporary world. We believe God the Holy Spirit is alive and moving in the world. For this reason we remain open to revelation, to all those things Jesus said he had yet to teach us, things we learn through science and other fields of knowledge. As an old church ad said, “Jesus died on the cross to take away our sins, not our minds.”

The ancient beauty and wisdom of our worship is our strong foundation. It is what anchors us as we seek together to discern what our baptismal promises mean each day. What do promises to “seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself,” and to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being” mean in our daily encounters with other people, some very different from us?

It takes courage to be open so the movements of the Spirit can flourish and all humanity, all creation, can thrive. It is in our ancient worship that that courage to see, learn, accept, and act on revelations is born, nurtured, and encouraged.

The tradition gives us the stability to lean into a changing world. It lets us risk change.

ROOTED IN ANCIENT TRADITIONS

The Episcopal Church is rooted in ancient traditions. We are shaped by the wisdom, prayer, and practices of countless generations so we can face the challenges of our contemporary world.

We go to church not only for comfort, but also for courage; not only for pardon, but also for renewal. Then we are sent forth into the world, carrying the message of God’s unquenchable love for each and every one of us, including you, to a hungry hurting world.

The Episcopal Church is a member of the Worldwide Anglican Communion. one of the world’s largest Christian communities. Anglicanism is one of the traditions or expressions of Christian faith.

Anglican worship is based on ancient practices and traditions. Our Book of Common Prayer is at the heart of our worship. It is filled with beautiful prayers created over centuries of thought and prayer, just as centuries of devotion have gone into creating customs, ceremonies, and rites which are beautiful and inspiring.

PARTICIPATORY WORSHIP

We are a liturgical church. Our worship nearly always includes a procession of vested clergy and others up the center aisle at the beginning of the service, for instance. The incorporation of ancient religious symbols, the singing of hymns, the communal recitation of such prayers as The Lord’s Prayer, the congregation’s united response to petitions read aloud to God, the observation of the church year, the following of a lectionary (the readings from scripture appointed for specific days of the year), and performance of the sacraments all mark the worship practices typical of a liturgical church.

“Liturgy” comes from the Greek word meaning, “Work of the people.” While the deacons, priests and bishop have distinct roles in worship, the congregation does not sit passively. They are part of the service, giving responses, participating in communal prayer, and reading scripture. Liturgical churches are pretty participatory.

BAPTISM AND WORSHIP

All Christians are grounded in the ancient sacrament of baptism, a sacrament we share with Jesus, baptized by John in the River Jordan. In the waters of baptism, we are lovingly adopted by God into God’s family, which we call the Church, and given God’s own life to share. We are reminded that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ. Holy Baptism, which can be performed through pouring of water or immersion in it, marks a formal entrance to the congregation and wider Church; the candidates for the sacrament make a series of vows, including an affirmation of the Baptismal Covenant, and are baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are marked as Christ’s own forever, having “clothed [themselves] with Christ” (Galatians 3:27).

Our principle worship service, called a Eucharist, is modeled after the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples “on the night when he was betrayed.” The word eucharist is from the Greek, and means “thanksgiving.” At the Last Supper Jesus shared the bread and cup of wine at a sacred meal with his disciples. He identified the bread with his body and the wine with his blood of the new covenant – God’s promise to God’s people. Jesus commanded his disciples to “do this” in remembrance of him (see 1 Cor 11:23-26; Mk 14:22-25; Mt 26:26-29; Lk 22:14-20). Christ’s sacrifice is made present by the eucharist, and in it we are united to his one self-offering (Book of Common Prayer, p. 859). The Last Supper provides the basis for the fourfold eucharistic action of taking, blessing, breaking, and sharing. Christ’s body and blood are really present in the sacrament of the eucharist and received by faith. Christ’s presence is also known in the gathered community.

TAKING GOD TO THE WORLD

In addition to worshiping and reconciling the world to God, the Church is to teach. Bible passages are read out loud in our worship, and sermons comment and enlarge on them and other issues, and relate Christianity to real life. But we also have a responsibility to make our own insights about God available and visible to the rest of the world, particularly in the way we live our daily lives.

We believe lay people have ministries just as do ordained people like deacons, priests, and bishops. Here is how our Catechism [an outline of the faith], says it:

Who are the ministers of the Church?

The ministers of the Church are lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons.

What is the ministry of the laity?

The ministry of lay persons is to represent Christ and his Church; to bear witness to him wherever they may be; and, according to the gifts given them, to carry on Christ’s work of reconciliation in the world; and to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church.

All four orders – deacon, priests, bishops, and lay people – are a partnership, centered around Jesus Christ.

Digging Deeper

Women Deacons, Priests, and Bishops in The Episcopal Church

The Christian church has discriminated against particular groups for such a long time that we must explicitly state what should be obvious and self-evident:

In The Episcopal Church, women are of equal worth and dignity with men, and have full access to all orders of ministry, including the ordained priesthood and the office of bishop. They serve as deacons, priests, and bishops. From 2006 to 2015, the presiding bishop of our church was a woman, the Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori. (Our current presiding bishop is the first African American to hold that office, the Most Rev. Michael Curry.)

This openness to the full inclusion of women in the life, worship, and ministry of the Church was a long time coming. Women had been seeking entry into the leadership roles of the Church for decades. A 1967 General Convention resolution had opened the diaconate to women and recognized that women currently serving as deaconesses were indeed ordained clergy and members of the diaconate.

Resolutions on women’s ordination had been narrowly defeated at the 1970 and 1973 General Conventions, the governing body of The Episcopal Church. Fed up with the delays, a group of women deacons decided on a courageous and prophetic action.

On July 29, 1974, in Philadelphia, three bishops, claiming that “obedience to the Spirit” justified their action, ordained these eleven women deacons to the priesthood. These brave women came to be known as the Philadelphia Eleven. The ensuing controversy surrounding these irregular ordinations highlighted divisions evident in the church over this issue, but also presented the church with the incarnational reality of women priests at the altar. Suddenly this wasn’t just theoretical. These were real woman offering real sacraments. It profoundly changed the conversation.

Finally, in 1976 the General Convention approved the ordination of women to the priesthood and the episcopate (bishops) in The Episcopal Church and stated that such ordinations might begin on Jan. 1, 1977.

After the 1976 vote, most dioceses accepted the ordination of women, and ordinations of women proceeded at a rapid rate. The 1997 General Convention revised the canons to prevent any diocese from denying access to the ordination process, or refusing to license a member of the clergy to officiate, solely on the grounds of gender.

Digging Deeper

Remarriage after Divorce

Is remarriage after divorce permitted in The Episcopal Church?

Yes.

Can divorced or remarried people receive communion in The Episcopal Church?

Yes.

The Episcopal Church believes marriage is a sacrament intended to be life-long, but also recognizes circumstances can exist where a divorce is necessary and even healthy.

The canons (laws) of the Episcopal Church on remarriage after divorce are based on two Christian doctrines:

that marriage is a lifelong union instituted by God which signifies the union between Christ and the Church, and

that God, in infinite mercy and redeeming love, creates new life in death, gives hope where there is despair and forgives our sins.

Divorced people who do remarry may choose a church ceremony, according to diocesan guidelines, or a civil ceremony.

Divorced people are treated the same as anyone else. Every baptized person is welcome to communion, regardless of marital status. Divorced people are not excommunicated. Anyone is welcome to participate in fellowship activities, and many parishes have special groups for singles, divorced, and widowed people.

The Church does seek to help couples to build strong and grace filled commitments after the death of their prior marriages. The Church knows that time is necessary for healing, for learning, and for forgiveness. So the norm is that at least one year will have elapsed between the final decree of divorce and the date of the petition for remarriage sent to the bishop. Check with your priest for local diocesan policies.

Digging Deeper

Loving One Another As Ourselves

Digging Deeper – What does loving one another as ourselves mean?

All human beings are created fully in the image of God, and as such, are worthy of respect. Full stop.

Christians are called to treat all people with respect, indeed, we are called to love one another as we love ourselves. Jesus doesn’t command us to “love your neighbor AS MUCH AS yourself.” We’re commanded to love our neighbors as ourselves, as a continuation of our very own being. To love our neighbor as our self is to see us as connected. That’s why we use the image of the Body of Christ. The Apostle Paul writes about the Church this way – as living members of the Body of Christ. When one member of the Body rejoices, we all rejoice. When one member suffers, we all suffer.

Think about your body. If you drop a hammer on your toe, the rest of your body doesn’t just shrug and say, “Sorry about that toe; the rest of us are okay.” There is a shared sense of urgency to do something about the pain in that toe.

How we talk to, with, and about each other must reflect that connectedness among us, all of us images of God.

The Episcopal Church always has held civility to be a virtue, sometimes too much so; for example when we would stop listening to people in pain just because their justifiable anger manifested itself in challenging and less-than-civil discourse. The Church began to seriously examine the topic in 2014, with a church-wide conference on Civil Discourse in Philadelphia.

At that conference, Rabbi Steve Gutow, president and CEO of the Jewish Council on Public Affairs, reminded participants that all three Abrahamic faiths — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — believe people are created in God’s image, and

“so people of faith must encounter each other as if they have a spark of God’s great wisdom in them that others can learn from, even when they do not agree with each other.”

Faith communities, he said, must act out of what he called a passionate commitment to what they believe God is telling them to do as well as a passionate commitment to the idea that each person is created in the image of God and thus must be honored.

The Episcopal Church is committed to resisting the urge to demonize opponents and to bringing light rather than heat to conversations on potentially divisive issues. We are committed to utilizing, teaching, and modeling civil discourse among ourselves and all we encounter.
